Frías de Albarracín is 1,496 m above sea level, in the southwest the Sierra de Albarracín mountain range, only 21 km from Albarracín and 56 km from Teruel city. The municipal district currently consists of a single town with around 168 inhabitants, half way up the eastern slope of Cerro del Castillo hill.
The Poblado del Castillo ruins are the oldest known remains of a settlement in this municipal district. They are thought to date from 1520 BC, in the Bronze Age. Remains from the First Iron Age continuing into Iberian times have also been found in Villar de Muelas. In addition, 2nd century Roman remains have been found in Villar de Muelas and Hoya Vicente.
Among the buildings of architectural interest, several houses are particularly noteworthy with their arched doorways and forged iron bars on their windows. Neoclassical Asunción Church dates back to the 19th century. It has one nave with a transept and a tower at the base, and was restored in 1967. The San Roque and Virgen del Carmen Shrines, in Casas de Frías, are also worth a visit.
There are many landscapes of outstanding beauty in the area around Frías de Albarracín. You can delight in stunning views such as La Dehesa and El Estepar pinewoods; El Cuerno, El Pie and Barranco de la Hoz hills; the Tagus River, and many fountains and picnic areas: El Berro, El Buey, Las Mentirosas, El Rastrillo, El Cuerno and La Mora.
